Some people run to achieve a new personal record, while others run to simply feel good. Those “just to get it over with” runners reading this — you may be startled by the fact that you can actually get a natural euphoric high feeling from running. It’s known as the runner’s high and it kicks in when you’ve pushed yourself longer or harder than usual.

What Exactly is Runner’s High?

Runner’s high is a euphoric feeling a person experiences after prolonged, strenuous aerobic exercise. It can make exercise feel like an effortless, blissful task as your perception of pain and stress is decreased. A common misconception is that only runners can experience runner’s high, but any long endurance exercisers have the opportunity to achieve it with sustained physical activity.

Runner’s high has been long associated with the release of neurotransmitters called Endorphins, but recently, scientists have discovered that these endorphin molecules are actually too large to pass from the bloodstream to the brain. Endocannabinoids, on the other hand, can.

The Endocannabinoid System (ECS) exists within our bodies and produces enzymes (endocannabinoids) that interact with your nervous system. It helps to regulate your stress levels, inflammation responses, cognitive functions, and even eating and sleeping patterns. Levels of Anandamide, an endocannabinoid in the body that regulates your mood, also increases as you exercise. CBD assists and supports these processes by supplementing the body’s own endocannabinoids.

Chasing Runner’s High, Literally.

Runner’s High can be difficult to attain, but we do know that those who have experienced it, are more likely to push themselves to experience it again. Your brain will constantly crave the sense of euphoria, driving you to chase it through harder workouts.

The main tip for achieving this sensation is to push your body to a reasonably challenging limit, while maintaining that pace for a long period of time. This consistency and prolonged stress is what pushes your body to respond with runner’s high. It’s important to remember that everyone is different. Some may experience it after mile 6, while others will after mile 20.

Resilience Pro Tip: If you’re trying to achieve runners high, sign up for a race! No better way to push yourself to the limit and hold yourself accountable.

Happy Running!
